10/21/2016 1 Comment Academic Mindset Reflection Who did I work with to compose my academic mindset project? Was this a good approach?
I worked on this project mostly by myself. I think this was a good approach because I was able to think for myself and have only my own thoughts put into the project. What was the most difficult part of my writing process? Why? What did I do to overcome the obstacles? I think the hardest part was reading through articles. This was difficult for me because a lot of the words used in both of the article didn’t make sense to me so it was hard to understand what each author was trying to say. I decided to read them a couple more times and take notes throughout each section. I also googled any word that I was unfamiliar with. This helped me process the articles a lot better. When are where did I write this project? Good approach? I wrote this very last minute and at my house. This was not a good approach because since I already had trouble with the article it was very frustrating knowing I didn’t give myself enough time to do my best work. Why did I chose to write about my chosen topic? Out of both article I chose to side with Carol Dweck’s article because I believed that her idea of growth mindset made the most sense to me. How will I revise my writing process for future revision of the academic mindset assignment?

10/5/2016 0 Comments Four Academic MindsetsAcademic Mindsets are beliefs, attitudes, or ways of perceiving oneself in relation to learning and intellectual work that support academic performance. The four academic mindsets talked about in chapter five of “Teaching Adolescents to become learners” are, I belong in this academic community, my ability and competence grow with my effort, I can succeed at this, this work has value. I feel that each of these mindsets are very important in becoming a better student. However, I relate the most to the mindset of this work has value. In the chapter, it states that learners are naturally motivated to learn when they perceive a task to be inherently interesting.
As a student, I tend to put more effort in a certain task if it sparks my interests. The chapter also says that students are more likely to expend persistent effort and exhibit academic behaviors that supports school success if the student sees a connection between academic tasks and their own future goals. In order for me to succeed at Delaware County Community College I try to remind myself that all the work I put into my classes will have value when I’m finished. One way I’m able to stay focused on a particular task is knowing it’s going to benefit me in the end. For me, if I don’t have an end goal I become very uninterested in the task. Especially in school, if I’m learning something I know I’m never going to need to know for my everyday life I often say to myself “what’s the point?” The key to my success at Delaware County Community College is having the mindset of this work has value for me. |
